The Danish designer couple Nanna and Jørgen Ditzel, who rethought the functionalist design tradition and contributed to popularising Danish design across the world in the 1950s, will now become part of the Carl Hansen & Søn universe. The Danish furniture manufacturer adds the couple’s legendary high chair to its collection of design classics.

Children’s furniture must above all be functional and able to facilitate the everyday life of families with children, yet must also be visually and aesthetically appealing. Designer couple Nanna and Jørgen Ditzel, who today is considered among the brightest beacons in Danish design, were well aware of this. Throughout their careers, the couple dared to challenge design traditions and experiment with new materials while creating a range of functional furniture – including the ND54 High Chair. They designed the chair in 1954 because they themselves needed a functional and beautiful chair for their own twin girls, who were born that same year.

Carl Hansen & Søn is now reintroducing the high chair in its iconic simplicity, simultaneously adding Nanna and Jørgen Ditzel to the company’s extensive designer portfolio. The high chair is considered one of the most outstanding works of children’s furniture – not least because the design is considerate of children’s needs while also being a furniture piece that engages with the other furniture around the dining table. The Ditzels’ elegant chair is simply the embodiment of a Danish design tradition where functionality and aesthetics are equally important.
